Claude Design: what it makes, what it costs, how it compares
Claude Design is Anthropic’s answer to a common problem: you know what you want a slide, prototype or flyer to say, but not how to make it look right. You describe it, Claude builds a first version in your brand, and you refine it until it is ready to share or build.
This guide covers what Claude Design makes, how you work with it, which Claude plans include it, what it costs in rand, and how it compares with Canva and Gamma.
What is Claude Design?
Anthropic launched Claude Design on 17 April 2026 as an Anthropic Labs product, in research preview for Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers. It ran on Claude Opus 4.7 at launch. Anthropic has since built it into Claude itself, so you can now use it from inside any conversation, including in Claude Code. Anthropic’s help centre describes Claude Design, Claude Slides and Claude Docs as being in beta.
What Claude Design makes
According to Anthropic, teams use it for:
- Prototypes: turning static mockups into interactive prototypes you can click through and share
- Wireframes and mockups: sketching feature flows before anyone writes code
- Pitch decks and presentations: from a rough outline to a finished deck
- One-pagers: for example, turning a proposal into a page a prospect will actually read
- Marketing material: landing pages, social media assets and campaign visuals
- Design explorations: many directions quickly, so a designer can choose
How you work with it
- Describe what you need. Start from a text prompt, or bring in DOCX, PPTX or XLSX files, images or your codebase.
- Get a first version. Claude builds it using your design system if you have set one up.
- Refine it. Chat with Claude, comment on a specific element, edit text directly, or use the sliders Claude creates to adjust spacing, colour and layout. You can also drag, resize and align elements yourself.
- Share or hand it on. Every design gets a link that is private until you share it.
Brand consistency is the main selling point. You can bring in one or more design systems from a GitHub repository, design files or uploads, and Claude checks its output against them. On team plans, an admin can lock everyone to a single approved design system.

Anthropic lists these ways to get work out of Claude Design:

Which Claude plans include Claude Design?
Anthropic says Claude Design is included in all paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Its pricing page shows Claude Design, Slides and Docs are not part of the free plan, which our guide to the free Claude plan covers in full. On Team and Enterprise plans, an admin must turn it on in Organization settings.
There is no separate Claude Design fee. Designs count toward your plan’s usage limits like the rest of your work with Claude, and Anthropic says larger requests, such as a full deck, use more of your allowance than a typical message.
What Claude Design costs in rand
Because it comes with a Claude plan, the cost is your plan. Anthropic lists US dollar prices, excluding tax. Converted at R16.32 to the dollar, before VAT:

Claude Design vs Canva and Gamma
Canva is a template-led design editor with a large library of stock images and templates. In South Africa it sells in rand: there is a free plan, and Pro is listed at R900 a year for one person. Gamma is an AI tool for presentations, documents and simple websites, with a free tier and paid plans from US$9 a seat a month on annual billing (about R147 before VAT).
Claude Design is strongest when you want work built from your own brand and materials, or a prototype that can become working software through Claude Code. It is not a replacement for either: it can send designs to both Canva and Gamma for final editing.
Tips before you start
- Set up your design system first. It is the difference between generic output and work that looks like your company.
- Check every fact on a slide. Claude can build a beautiful deck around a wrong number.
- Keep customer data out. Do not upload files with customers’ personal information to build a design; under POPIA your business stays responsible for it.
- Watch your usage. Full decks and designs use more of your plan’s allowance than a chat message.

Is Claude Design better than Canva?
They do different jobs. Canva is a template-led design editor with a large library and a free plan, priced in rand in South Africa. Claude Design builds a first version from a description and your own brand materials, and can hand work to Claude Code to build. Many people will use both, and Claude Design can send designs to Canva.
Can Claude Design follow my company's brand?
