Claude AI free: what you get in South Africa, and when to pay

If you want Claude AI free of charge, you can have it. Anthropic’s free plan works in South Africa, costs R0 and needs no bank card. You get the same Claude on the web, on your computer and on your phone, with lower limits than the paid plans.

This guide covers what the free plan includes, where it stops, how to sign up with a South African number, and when Pro or Max is worth the money in rand. Prices were checked on Anthropic’s pricing page on 28 September 2026.

Is Claude AI free? What the free plan includes

Yes. According to Anthropic’s pricing page, the free plan lets you:

• chat with Claude on the web, the desktop app and the mobile apps
• search the web, create files and run code
• keep memory across conversations
• connect apps and tools, and create Artifacts (documents, small apps and visuals inside the chat)
• use voice mode, incognito chats and up to five Projects

The free plan runs on Anthropic’s Sonnet and Haiku models. The more capable Opus models, and Anthropic’s top-end Fable models, need a paid plan.

The limits of the free plan

The main limit is usage. Anthropic’s help centre says the free plan has a session-based usage limit that resets every five hours, and that the number of messages you can send varies with demand. Long chats, big file uploads, web searches and file creation all use up the allowance faster.

When you hit the limit, Claude tells you and you wait for the reset. Paid plans have limits too, but they are higher, and you can check your weekly allowance in Settings.

Other things the free plan leaves out:

• Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent (see our Claude Code guide)
• Research, the longer research mode that pulls from many sources
• Claude in Chrome and the Microsoft 365 add-ins
• Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and scheduled tasks
• Searching your past chats, which is a paid feature, although memory itself is on for free users

How to sign up for Claude in South Africa

South Africa is on Anthropic’s list of supported countries for Claude, so there is no workaround needed.

1. Go to claude.ai and sign up with your email address.
2. Enter a South African cellphone number that can receive SMS. Anthropic sends a six-digit code.
3. Type in the code, and your account is ready.

A few rules from Anthropic’s help centre are worth knowing before you start. You must be 18 or older. VoIP numbers, landlines and numbers created in apps are not accepted. One number can verify at most three accounts, and you cannot change the verified number later, so use a number you will keep.

Claude desktop and the Claude AI app

Claude desktop is a free download for macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later, with a Linux version in beta. Get it from claude.com/download. On the free plan the desktop app gives you chat; Claude Code and Cowork inside the app need a paid plan.

The Claude AI app for phones is listed as Claude by Anthropic. It needs iOS 18 or later on iPhone and iPad, or Android 8.0 or later. In the South African App Store the provider is Anthropic PBC. Check that name before you install, because fake AI apps and download sites are a known way to spread malware.

Your chats sync across the web, desktop and phone, so you can start a task on your laptop and pick it up on your phone.

Claude Pro and Max: when it is worth paying

Stay on Free if you use Claude a few times a week for writing, questions and summaries. Pay when the five-hour limit keeps interrupting real work, or when you need Claude Code, Research or the Opus models.

Anthropic lists its prices in US dollars and says they exclude tax. Converted at R16.32 to the dollar:

Max is billed monthly only. The last column is what Apple’s South African App Store charges for the same plans when you subscribe inside the iPhone app. At today’s exchange rate, the web price plus VAT comes to less than the App Store price, although your bank may add a foreign transaction fee, so check the total at checkout. Privacy settings on the free plan

The free plan runs on Anthropic’s consumer terms, the same as Pro and Max. Three settings matter.

• Model training. You choose whether Anthropic may use your chats and coding sessions to improve Claude, and you can change it at any time under Settings, then Privacy. If you allow it, Anthropic says it may keep de-identified data for up to five years. If you do not, chats you delete are removed from its back-end systems within 30 days.
• Incognito chats. Click the ghost icon to start a chat that is not saved to your history or memory and is not used for training. Anthropic still keeps incognito chats for 30 days.
• Feedback. Pressing thumbs up or down sends the whole conversation to Anthropic, which stores it for up to five years.

For a business, the rule is simple: do not paste customers’ personal information into a free or personal account. POPIA applies to what you share, whichever tool you use.
