Is ChatGPT free? Free vs Go vs Plus prices in South Africa

ChatGPT free is not a trick: OpenAI’s free plan costs R0 and covers most everyday questions, writing and summaries. What you give up is speed at busy times, OpenAI’s newest models, and generous limits on images, uploads and voice.

Since October 2025 OpenAI has priced ChatGPT in rand for South Africans, so the paid plans no longer move with the exchange rate. Below is what each plan costs and adds, taken from OpenAI’s South African pricing page on 28 September 2026.

Is ChatGPT free? What the free plan gives you

Yes. According to OpenAI, free users get:

• unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to OpenAI’s abuse guardrails
• web search, file and image uploads, data analysis and image creation, each with its own limit
• limited voice chats, deep research, memory and Codex access
• the Think option for harder questions, in the mobile app and rolling out on the web

The catches are real but manageable. OpenAI says response times on Free and Go depend on available capacity. GPT Instant, the fast model, accepts about 12 pages of text at once on Free, against about 40 pages on Go and Plus. And OpenAI says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans in some countries, while Plus and higher plans are ad-free.

ChatGPT price in South Africa: every plan in rand

These are OpenAI’s own rand prices. Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly only, because OpenAI does not offer annual billing on those plans. Annual billing is only available on Business and Enterprise.

What Go, Plus and Pro add

Go (R149) raises the limits on image creation, file uploads, data analysis and voice, and gives ChatGPT a longer memory. OpenAI says Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol or the legacy models, and that the plan may include ads.

Plus (R399) is the plan most working people should compare against. It adds OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models (the GPT-6 family on the pricing page), expanded deep research, Codex for coding, ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, image creation with thinking, faster responses and no ads.

Pro adds far more usage and OpenAI’s Pro reasoning model, along with the most Codex tasks and deep research. It only makes sense if you hit Plus limits every day, usually for coding or long research jobs.

ChatGPT Pro subscription: the two tiers

OpenAI now sells Pro in two sizes: Pro 5x, with five times the usage of Plus, and Pro 20x, with twenty times. On the web, Pro starts at R1,839 a month in South Africa. Apple’s South African App Store lists Pro 5x at R1,839 and Pro 20x at R3,999.99 a month.

There is a catch. On 10 September 2026 OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the Pro 20x tier. Existing subscribers keep it, and Pro 5x is still open. If you are weighing up a ChatGPT Pro subscription today, Pro 5x is the one you can buy.

ChatGPT Business for teams

Business is OpenAI’s plan for companies with 2 to 200 staff. You can mix standard seats (R320 per user a month on annual billing) with premium seats (R1,600) for people who need five times the usage. OpenAI lists single sign-on and MFA, central billing and admin, connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, and no training on your business data by default.

That last point matters under POPIA. On personal Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts, OpenAI’s pricing page says your content can be used to train its models unless you opt out. How to pay for ChatGPT in South Africa

• On the web: OpenAI bills South Africans in rand and accepts credit and debit cards. Log in, choose Upgrade plan from your profile menu, and pick a plan.
• In the app: if you subscribe on an iPhone or Android phone, Apple or Google bills you at their own rand prices. Apple’s South African store lists Go at R149.99 and Plus at R399.99.
• VAT: OpenAI’s pricing page does not say whether the rand price includes VAT. MyBroadband and TechCentral both noted that the rand prices sit about 15% above the dollar prices, which matches South Africa’s VAT rate. Check the total on the checkout screen.
• Cancelling: you can cancel at any time in Settings and keep access until the end of your billing period.

How to get the official ChatGPT app (and avoid fakes)

The ChatGPT app is free to download. Get it only from these places:

• iPhone and iPad: the App Store listing called ChatGPT, published by OpenAI OpCo, LLC
• Android: the Google Play listing called ChatGPT, with OpenAI as the developer
• Windows and Mac: chatgpt.com/download, which links to the Microsoft Store for Windows

Fake versions are a real risk. In May 2026 Malwarebytes reported a fake ChatGPT download site that copied OpenAI’s download page and installed password-stealing malware on Windows and Mac computers. Its advice was to download only from OpenAI’s official page or the Microsoft Store. Do not click download links in search ads, never type your ChatGPT password into a third-party app, and be wary of look-alike apps from other developers that charge a subscription.

Which ChatGPT plan should you choose?

• Students and occasional users: Free is enough.
• Heavy personal use on a budget: Go, at R149, if you keep hitting image or upload limits.
• Daily work: Plus, at R399, for the better models, Codex and no ads.
• A business with staff using it: Business, for admin control and no training on company data by default.
