ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity for a South African business

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are the three AI assistants a South African business is most likely to reach for, and the “which is best” debate mostly misses the point. In ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity, the right answer depends on the job you do most, the tools you already use and how you want to pay. Here is the comparison for business, with prices checked on 28 September 2026: what each is best at, what it costs in rand, and how to pick one.

Rand prices are the vendors' South African prices. Perplexity's dollar prices are converted at R16.32 and exclude 15% VAT. Plans change often, so check each vendor's pricing page.

ChatGPT: the all-round default, billed in rand

ChatGPT is the safe first choice for most businesses. It is strong at the language-heavy work that fills a small business week: drafting quotes, emails and proposals, summarising documents, answering customer questions and first-pass planning. OpenAI bills it in rand. The free plan gives unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna within fair use, Go at R149 raises the limits, and Plus at R399 adds OpenAI’s GPT-6 reasoning models, more deep research and Codex for coding.

For a team, ChatGPT Business costs R320 a seat a month billed annually, or R400 monthly, for 2 to 200 people, and OpenAI says it does not train on business data by default. One thing to know: OpenAI says Free and Go accounts may see ads where it is testing them, while Plus and higher plans are ad-free. Gemini: best if you live in Google

Gemini is Google’s assistant, and its edge is integration. If your business runs on Gmail, Docs and Sheets, Gemini fits most naturally and can work across what you already keep there. Its free plan is the most generous of the three, with Gemini 3.6 Flash, some use of Gemini 3.1 Pro, image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice chats.

Google sells Gemini in rand through Google One. Google AI Plus at R104.99 a month doubles the free limits, and Google AI Pro at R429.99 gives four times the free usage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage. Businesses on Google Workspace get Gemini inside their Workspace plan instead, and Google says Workspace does not use customer data to train models without the customer’s permission. On personal accounts, Google keeps Gemini chats for 18 months by default and a subset is read by human reviewers, unless you turn off Keep activity.

Perplexity: best for sourced research

Perplexity is a different shape from the other two. It is built as an answer engine around live web search, and every answer carries numbered citations you can click to see the source. That makes it the strongest of the three for market research, fact-checking and any question where you need current information you can verify.

The free plan gives cited answers with basic models and a few advanced searches a day. Pro costs US$20 a month (about R326 before VAT), or R399.99 through the iPhone app, and adds Deep Research, a choice of models and premium data from sources such as PitchBook and Statista. Enterprise Pro costs US$34 a seat billed annually (about R555), and Perplexity says Enterprise data is not used for training. On personal plans, your searches may be used to improve its AI unless you opt out in account settings.

Which one keeps business data safest?

For client work, the plan matters more than the brand. Business plans from all three keep your data out of model training: ChatGPT Business by default, Google Workspace unless you give permission, and Perplexity Enterprise. Personal plans can use your chats to improve the models unless you switch that off. If your business runs on Word, Excel and Outlook rather than Google, Microsoft Copilot deserves a look before any of these three. Microsoft 365 Personal at R159 a month puts Copilot inside the Office apps, and businesses can add Microsoft 365 Copilot to their plans. How to choose, in one line each

• Choose ChatGPT if you want one strong, general assistant for writing and everyday work, billed in rand.
• Choose Gemini if your business already lives in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, or you want the cheapest paid step.
• Choose Perplexity if your main job is research that needs current answers with sources you can check.

If you do two very different jobs, the common pairing is Perplexity for research alongside ChatGPT or Gemini for writing. But start with one.

The question these tools cannot answer for you

None of the three will get your own business named when a customer asks it for the best in your category.
