AI in Afrikaans: what KI means and which AI tools speak it

AI in Afrikaans is kunsmatige intelligensie, or KI for short. Using AI in Afrikaans is getting easier too: Google’s search and Gemini tools now work in Afrikaans, and some voice tools speak it well enough for call centres and audiobooks. This guide gives the sourced AI terms in Afrikaans, isiZulu and isiXhosa, shows which tools work in South African languages today, and flags where support is still thin.

What is artificial intelligence in Afrikaans?

The standard term is kunsmatige intelligensie, abbreviated KI, as in KI-stelsel for an AI system. It appears in an AI glossary that Google published in October 2025, built with the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) and the national language bodies for Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu, and released as an open dataset. Stellenbosch University uses the same term in its Afrikaans policy on the ethical use of AI.

AI in isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho and Setswana

The glossary does not yet cover Sesotho or Setswana, and we could not find an official AI term list for either, so we have not guessed. If you need terms for a formal document, PanSALB is the body to ask.

Which AI tools work in Afrikaans and other South African languages?

Support varies a lot. Here is what each maker says, as at 28 September 2026:

A few notes. OpenAI’s list covers ChatGPT’s menus and settings, not what you may type, so you can still write to ChatGPT in Afrikaans; OpenAI simply makes no promise about the quality. Anthropic says Claude handles most languages beyond those it benchmarks and advises testing it for your own use. Microsoft warns that Microsoft 365 Copilot can show an unsupported-language message for prompts outside its list; our guide to Microsoft Copilot in South Africa covers the rest.

Local chatbots vary too. Absa says its Abby assistant only speaks English, for example. Our list of South African company chatbots has the official numbers.

Gemini in Afrikaans

Afrikaans is on Google’s list of languages for the Gemini app. Type your question in Afrikaans, or tell Gemini at the start, for example: Antwoord asseblief in Afrikaans. Google’s search now does the same: in March 2026 it added Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana to AI Overviews and AI Mode, among 13 African languages. Google’s NotebookLM can also produce its podcast-style Audio Overviews in Afrikaans, which Google announced in April 2025.

Voice AI in Afrikaans and isiZulu

Voice is where local-language AI has moved furthest for businesses. Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech lists two Afrikaans voices, Adri and Willem, and two isiZulu voices, Thando and Themba, plus speech-to-text for both languages. It lists no voices for isiXhosa, Sesotho or Setswana. ElevenLabs lists Afrikaans and Zulu among the 90-plus languages of its current Eleven v4 models, but not the other South African languages. That makes Afrikaans and isiZulu phone menus, voice notes and audiobooks realistic, while the other languages still lag.

Efforts to close the language gap

• Lelapa AI’s Vulavula. Lelapa AI, a language AI lab that says it is starting with Africa, sells Vulavula to transcribe and translate African-language speech for contact centres in telecoms and financial services. It says Vulavula handles code-switching, the way South Africans mix languages mid-sentence, and its own examples show isiZulu and Sesotho.
• The Google and PanSALB glossary. The open glossary gives developers, teachers and translators agreed AI terms in Afrikaans, isiZulu and isiXhosa.
• Universities. Stellenbosch University publishes its AI position statement in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and our guide to AI in education covers what universities now allow.

Tips for better Afrikaans from any AI tool

1. Say what you want. Ask for standard South African Afrikaans and name the audience, for example a formal letter to a municipality or a friendly WhatsApp to customers.

3. Check the terms. Compare technical words against the glossary above.
4. Get a human check. For anything public, legal or medical, have a first-language speaker read it before it goes out.
